SIMULATION OF AN EMERGENCY EVENT IN THE NOVA STRAŽEVICA TUNNEL

PE "Roads of Serbia" in cooperation with members of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia - Department for Emergency Situations, Fire and Rescue Brigade Belgrade, Traffic Police Administration Belgrade, fire department – “Dobergard” ltd. and the emergency medical service Belgrade, on June 3, 2025, on the state road of I A order No. 1, in the left tube of the "Nova Straževica" tunnel on the Belgrade Bypass, conducted a simulation of an emergency event.

According to the operational plan defined by the Department for Occupational Safety and Health, Fire Protection and Rescue at Work, the tactical task included the simulation of an emergency event in the tunnel (a vehicle stopped due to a malfunction that was hit by another vehicle and a traffic accident with an injured person occurs).

The goal of the exercise was to train the operators of the Belgrade Regional Center to respond in emergency situations and practice coordination with the on-duty fire department and emergency services.

In this way, not only the human factor was tested, but also the ITS systems in the function of fire protection, which are part of the traffic control and management system in the tunnel operation centers. It was verified that the system would run the appropriate pre-defined scenario and set the fire protection systems in the appropriate operating mode.

Representatives of the Department of Traffic Supervision and Management controlled every response of the system to make sure that everything was going according to the scenario, while employees of the Management and Information Systems Maintenance Department checked the functioning of the information and communication infrastructure that they maintain 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in all weather conditions.

The Department of Safety and Health, Fire Protection and Rescue at Work periodically organizes exercises and trainings for employees in tunnel operation centers in order to be ready to respond in emergency situations.

Joint exercises of several services within the Company and cooperation with emergency services are an excellent example of good cooperation aimed at increasing the level of traffic safety and reducing the number of casualties, both in tunnels and tunnel zones, as well as on all state roads.
